Lost her holiday shoe:
What can little Betty do?
Give her another,
To match the other,
And then she may walk in two.

Gyermekvers angolul: Old King Cole

Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he:
He called for his pipe, he called for his bowl,
And he called for his fiddlers three.

Every fiddler, he had a fine fiddle,
And a very fine fiddle had he:
Oh, there's none so rare as can compare
With King Cole and his fiddlers three.

Gyermekvers angolul: The Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts
She made some tarts,
All on a summer's day.
The Knave of Hearts,
He stole the tarts,
And took them clean away.

The King of Hearts,
Called for the tarts,
And beat the Knave full sore.
The Knave of Hearts
Brought back the tarts,
And vowed he'd steal no more.

Mese angol nyelven: Jack and the Beanstalk

Once upon a time, there was a boy they called Jack of the Beanstalk. They called him that because one day he went to market and exchanged his cow for a handful of fine beans.

When he arrived home he planted them in his garden in the hope that they would bring forth good fruit.

However, the next day when he woke up, great was his amazement when he saw that the beans had grown so quickly that they reached up to the sky.

Jack climbed up the stalk of his plant. He went up and up until he was higher than the clouds. His house looked very tiny down there in the distance.

When he reached the top of his gigantic plant, he spied a castle in which there lived an enormous giant.

Jack, who was very brave, entered the castle and saw the giant, who was sitting listening to music and watching a hen laying golden eggs.

Jack marvelled and thought that if he had such a hen, there would be no more poverty in his house.

"Please Sír, will you lend me the hen that lays the golden eggs?" said he to the ogre.

By way of reply, the giant seized him and was about to put him in his lunchtime sandwich.

But Jack, who was very agile, jumped like a flea, seized the hen and began to run back to the beanstalk.

The giant set off after him, but the beanstalk swayed back and forth under his great weight.

Jack reached the ground first and, taking an axe, cut down the beanstalk at a single stroke.

The giant came down with such a bump that he no longer had the will to pursue him.

With the golden eggs laid by the hen, Jack was able to bring happiness to all the poor people in the town.

Mese angol nyelven: The Wind and the Sun

One day the wind and the sun had an angry argument.

"I am much stronger than you!" cried the wind.

"Nonsense, you are much weaker than I am!" shouted back the sun.

And so the argument went on, seemingly never to end.

But suddenly the sun saw a traveller walking along the road. The traveller wore a long cloak which he clutched tightly around him.

This gave the sun an idea. "Listen," he said to the wind, "suppose we have a contest of strenght? The one who makes the traveller remove his cloak shall be judget the stronger. If you agree, you may have the first try."

So, while the sun hid behind a cloud, the wind blew as hard as he could upon the traveller. But the more he blew, the tighter the traveller clung to his cloak, and at last the wind gave up in despair.

Now it was the turn of the sun, who turned his strongest rays upon the traveller. Soon the traveller was so hot that he took off his cloak so that he would feel cooler.

"You see, my friend," said the sun to the wind, "kindness has more effect than harsness."

Mese angol nyelven: Conceited Miss Mouse

One day, a very conceited little mouse found a coin as she was sweeping the garden and thought, "What shall I spend it on? Shall I buy a new dress or a bow for my tail?"

After she had thought, she bought herself a very pretty hat.

Looking at herself in the mirror, she said, "How pretty I am. Now I shall meet a fine handsome husband!"

Little Miss Mouse was very vain and only thought about trivialities.

All dressed up to the nines, the little mouse went out in search of a suitable partner.

"Hello, pretty Miss Mouse. Would you like to marry me?" asked a gallant cockerel.

"No! Your feathers are too showy. You will put my beauty in the shade."

Then a handsome dog came along and asked her, "Bow, wow, wow, dear little Miss Mouse, would you like to go out with me?"

"No! Your voice is too rough."

A duck came through the garden and asked her, "Quack, quack, quack, beautiful mouse, would you like to be my wife?"

"No! Your beak is too big and you frighten me when you open your mouth."

The poor duck went away very sad and disconsolate.

The same thing happened to all her suitors, until Mr Cat came along and said to her,"Miaouw, miaouw, miaouw. Hello little mouse, would you like to be my wife?"

"Oh yes! You have a lovely voice. My heart belongs to you already!"

They got married, and the mouse could not contain her delight.

But when they arrived home, the cat pounced upon her and would have eaten her up, for it is well known how fond cats are of mice. The little mouse cried out with all her might and her old cast off suitors came running to her aid and saved her from certain death.

That taught the conceited little mouse to look for good qualities and not to rely on external appearances.

For true beauty resides, not in good looks, but in a kind heart.

Rene Cloke: The red umbrella

" I think I will have a picnic by the river," said Ricky Rabbit.

He looked out of the window: the sun was shining but there were some big clouds in the sky.

" Perhabs I had better take my umbrella," he said, " it might rain and I don't like getting wet."

He put on his scarf, packed a flask of tea and a bag of biscuits, then he picked a big lettuce from the garden.

On the way to the river he called at the baker's shop and bought some currant buns and jam tarts.

" My little Dan and Daisy went down to the river this morning," said Mr Harvest Mouse, the baker," and they haven't come home yet. Look out for them, will you?"

" I will," answered Ricky. " Now, tell me, do you think it will eain?"

" Oh, no!" laughed Mr Harvest Mouse, " it's a lovely day!"

" Rather a pity I brought my umbrella," thought Ricky.

The first person he met as he walked through the woods to the river was Hopscotch, the frog.

Hopscotch was feeling very cross.

" I want to take home some blackberries," he grumbled, " but they are all growing so high up that I csn't reach them, fine hopper though I am."

Ricky hooked his umbrella over a branch and pulled it down.

" Oh, thank you!" cried Hopscotch, as he filled his cans, " that's splendid. I shall have enough to make bramble jelly and I will give you a pot to put in your store cupboard."

" That's very kind of you," said Ricky, " I'm fond of bramble jelly."

Ricky hummed a little tune as he walked on through the woods but he had rather a fright when he saw old Foxy taking a short cut to his den over the hill. Ricky and Foxy were not good friends and Foxy had a very hungry look in his eyes today.

" I mustn't let him see me," said Ricky and he looked around for a good hiding place.

Some big red toadstools were growing nearby, so Ricky put up his umbrella and popped underneath it.

Old Foxy thought that the red umbrella was another toadstool and went on his way without noticing the little rabbit.

" That was lucky," whispered Ricky.

He skipped along by the river looking for a comfortable place to have his tea and talking to someof the birds and animals he met.

Then he heard a little cry - "Help! help!"

"Who is that?" called Ricky looking across the water.

There, on the grassy island in the middle of the river, Ricky saw Dan and Daisy, the two little harvest mice.

" We rowed our boat up the river and landed on this island," cried Dan.

"But the boat drifted away," sobbed Daisy, " and we can't get back."

" This-looks like another job for my umbrella," decided Ricky.

He opened the big umbrella and floated it on the water, then he stepped inside and paddled out to the island.

" Oh, Ricky, you are clever," cried Dan, as he and Daisy scrambled in and Ricky paddled the umbrella back to the bank.

" Your umbrella makes a lovely boat," said Daisy.

" You must be hungry," said Ricky, when they were all safely ashore, " there's plenty in my basket for you both to share."

Everyone enjoyed the picnic: the lettuce and biscuits were fresh and crisp and the buns tarts were delicious.

" Although it didn't rain," said Ricky, " it's very lucky that I took my umbrella."

Mese angol nyelven: The sawdust dolls

My friends, you will have noticed how nice mechanical toys are, and dolls that walk and talk.

But an old man called Boniface had not realized this.

He thought that his sawdust dolls were the nicest in the world and looked lovingly on all of them.

Old Boniface lived solely for his beloved dolls and knew nothing about the sophisticated mechanisms of the new toys.

He went on as always, making sawdust toys out of scraps of coloured materials. They were miserable dolls with their little bodies full of stitches.

But the children did not like them, because they were disfigured with stitches and had gloomy faces.

"What will become of me if I cannot sell my beloved toys?" wept poor Boniface.

When Boniface went to market to sell his dolls, he spent hour after hour there without selling a single one.

He returned home wet and numb with cold, thinking that he would surely sell something another day. But many days went by with the same result, until at last, Boniface stopped taking them out.

And there they were, all the dolls, put aside and forgotten in an old cupboard.

Day after day, those friendly toys, made by the old man with such loving care felt neglected.

However, one night a little elf came in at the window and took pity on the old man and the toys.

One by one he touched them with his magic wand and the seams and sawdust stuffing disappeared in a trice.

They were so happy to feel their hearts beating in their chests that they sang of merriment and joy.

"Now we are the most beautiful and unusual dolls in the world!" sang Bunny contentedly.

The next morning, on seeing such a marvel, the old man felt very happy.

"Oh!" he exclaimed. "My toys have turned themselves into the finest and best in the world!"

"I want this one."

" Give me that one!"

And so, with the help of that tiny elf, the children fought to buy those splendid dolls into which the old man had put so much love.

Gyermekvers angolul: I saw a ship a-sailing

I saw a ship a-sailing,
a-sailing on the sea:
And, oh, it was all laden
with pretty things for thee!
There were comfits in the cabin,
and apples in the hold:
The sails were all of silk,
and the masts were made of gold.

The four-and-twenty sailors
that stood upon the decks,
Were four-and-twenty white mice,
with chains about their necks.
The captain was a duck,
with a packet on his back:
And when the ship began to move,
the captain cried:
"Quack! Quack!"

Mese angol nyelven: The crow and the pitcher

One day a crow, half-dead with thirst, found a water-jar known as a pitcher. The crow hopped over eagerly to the pitcher, but to his dismay the crow found that only a little water was keft it. Although he tried hard to reach the drops of water at the bottom, the poor crow could not touch them with his beak.

The crow stared in despair at the pitcher, and then suddenly he had an idea. All around him were a number of small pebbles, and so very slowly, one by one, the crow started to pick up the pebbles in his beak and drop them into the pitcher.

It was slow, hard work for the halfstarved bird, but the crow continued until, as the pebbles grew in the pitcher, the water began to rise, and at last the water rose high enough for the crow to quench his thirst.

Those few drops of precious water saved the bird's life, and the crow had managed to solve his problem a little at a time, pebble by pebble, which only goes to show that sometimes a seemingly impossible task can be achieved little by little, if you just have the patience to keep going.

Mese angol nyelven: The hen that laid the golden eggs

Joanna was a very good girl, but she was very poor. Such was her poverty, that sometimes she only had a curst f bread, and would hand that over if anyone asked for it.

As she was so good, one day a magician gave her beautiful white hen.

The next day, Joanna went to see if the hen had laid an egg for her breakfast and...what a surprise! The hen had laid an egg - but it was made of solid gold.

She was very pleased with it and took it straight to show her mother, and together they went to the jeweller's to sell it.

With the money they received for that precious egg, they were able to buy many things they lacked - food, clothes, shoes and other articles.

From that day forward, Joanna was a rich and disagreeable little girl, who on one occasion, even threw out of her house a little boy who asked for a crust of bread.

But zhe day after she had treated the boy so badly, when Joanna went to collect the golden egg laid by the hen - what a disappointment! All she found were lovely fat fried eggs.

" What's this! Where are the golden aggs?" asked Joanna angrily.

"Cluck, cluck, cluck," said the hen.

" I'll give you cluck cluck, cluck, you bad hen! Aren't you ashamed at laying such rubbish?" shouted Joanna.

And she began to beat the hen with her broom. The poor bird was very frightened by the rage of her mistress.

But the next day, the magician appeared to her again and said, " It is not the fault of your hen that it is not laying golden eggs. It is your bad behaviour in not being charitable to the poor, and I have punished you. It will not lay any more golden eggs until you change your ways."

Joanna was very sorry and ashamed and she understood that it was a punishment she well deserved. She ean out in search of the poor boy she had turned away a few days before and invited him in to eat.

From then on, the hen continued to lay the golden eggs, which she distributed to all the poor children of the town.

Mese angol nyelven: A little donkey for a car

Jimmy, who was a nature-lover and admired all that was beautiful, lived in a pretty little house in the country.

He lived on the vegetables that he planted and grew for himself, and he did all these things with the help of his friend, the little donkey.

But unfortunately, nobody is satisfied with what he has and he thought, "This little donkey is very slow and can't carry very much."

While he was on his way home, Jimmy had a fantastic idea.

"If I were to exchange him for one of those cars they have in the towns, that go so lovely and fast, I should be a real man about town and could visit distant towns and cities."

The poor little donkey was aware of the bad intentions of his master and was very sad.

There came a day, when he changed the little donkey for a car and happily decided to go for a drive with some very nice company.

"Pap pap!" sounded the horn of the car, which had handsome gilt headlamps.

" Faster, Jimmy!" cried his friends, impatient to be off.

The little donkey was left behind, sad and alone. He felt very hurt that he had been deserted. He could not keep back his tears at the thought of his friend bowling along in his modern four-wheeler.

" Bye-Bye Jimmy!" sobbed the donkey. " You soon forgot about me!"

Jimmy could not have been more happy, driving along, when suddenly nuts and bolts began coming out on all sides.

"Goodness, what is happening!"

"Oh! The car is falling to pieces!" he cried.

That was what happened when he changed his little donkey for that noisy old banger.

There was absolutely nothing he could do to get it going again, it would not do as it was told.

"Ha! Ha! Ha!" laughed his friends, "Where is Jimmy's car now!"

The little donkey bore him no ill-feeling and welcomed him back with a friendly bray.

"My own dear little donkey. How I have missed you! You will do anything I want for a handful of grass, but zhat old banger won't do anything, not even for the best biscuits."

And so our young friend learned the truth of that old saying, " Better the devil you know..."

Mese angol nyelven: The stars rain down

Once upon a time there was a poor little orphan girl. She was so poor that she had nowhere to sleep. One day, she met a poor old man who said to her," Give me a morsel of bread, for the love of God, I am dying of hunger!"

She had only one piece of bread, but she was a generous little girl and she gave it to him and went on her miserable way.

A little later, she met a boy who was crying and saying," I am so cold, my head is so cold, give me sommething to cover myself with."

The little girl took off her cap and gave it to him.

Then she met a little girl who had no dress and nothing to cover herself with. The poor thing was weeping bitterly and shivering with cold.

Our friend took pity on her and gave her her own dress.

"Here take it!" she said. "It may be old but it is wool and will keep you warm."

On and on she went until she came to the forest, where she met another little girl who was quite naked, and asked her for the little vest she was wearing. The little orphan thought to herself, "It will soon be night time, so no one will see me."

She took off her vest and gave it to her. It was the only thing she had left.

"Thank you," said the little girl and went away.

She prepared to spend the night in the forest. She was numb with cold, but satisfied that she had been able to help others less fortunate than herself.

Suddenly, in the distance, she saw some stars that seemed to be coming nearer.

"What pretty stars!" she said to herself. She had never seen them so close before.

The stars came lower and lower until they fell into the hands of the little girl, and when they touched her they turned into gold coins.

That is how the little girl received her reward from Heaven. Our Lord, moved by the good deeds she had done, had taken pity on her and sent her the golden coins so that she would never be poor again and could go on doing good to others.

Mese angol nyelven: Going fishing for the day

One fine day in spring, Pippa was looking forward so much to going fishing in the river, for she felt like eating some nice fresh fish.

With her went her inseparable friend, Snowy, a cheerful cat with a big appetite.

When they had walked for a while, Pippa found a nice quiet spot by the river, and there she stayed with Snowy.

When she had made all her preparations very carefully, Pippa cast her line into the water.

"They are biting already!" cried she happily, hauling in her rod strongly. Snowy helped his mistress, for he knew that he would at least get the bones of the fish. And he was so hungry!

After they had pulled and pulled, they finally succeeded in hauling a fine golden fish from the river.

"Look what we've caught!" cried Pippa hapilly.

And Snowy was already licking his lips at the prospect that awaited him.

"That's enough for today. It's so big!" said Pippa to Snowy. But just as they were about to leave, they heard a little voice coming from the river, saying tearfully, "Please don't take my Mummy away. Don't take my Mummy away, please!"

Pippa looked towards the voice and said," I think we've caught the mummy of that little fish. Poor thing! How tiny he is!"

And our friend, who was really very kind hearted, put the fish back in the river, for she did not want that poor little fish to pine for his mother.

Snowy was not very pleased, for he knew that would leave him without his tasty snack.

"It was worth losing our catch to see that little fish and his mother happy together again," thought Pippa.

When he saw them splashing about together in the water, Snowy, who had a heart too, had to admit that his little friend had done the right thing.

Mese angol nyelven: A heart of gold

Paul's favourite game was playing tricks on all the animals and this made him feel good.

The angels in heaven were very upset when they saw the bad things Paul was doing.

Two little cherubs read in the Angelic News that there was on earth a doctor skilled at mending hearts and hastened to him.

"Look Doctor, Paul is very naughty with all the animals and we should like you to try and change his heart to make him good."

Paul was very frightened when he went to the doctor, for when he saw that boy had such a bad heart, he cried, "It will need a transplant operation right away!"

The doctor looked high and low to find a suitable heart for Paul, for he needed a good transplant to make that naughty boy good.

"Let's see, yes that might be the one. But no, maybe this one then!"

All the little cherubs up in heaven helped the doctor by bringing him more and more hearts for him to choose the most suitable one for Paul.

At last, after a great deal of searching, the doctor found what he was looking for.

The doctor set to work.

Paul was very frightened but he came through the operation with great fortitude, for he knew that it was for his own good. It would make him into a good little boy and the angels would be very pleased.

The transplant of that bad heart by one from heaven was a complete success and the results were soon apparent.

The angels were very happy that they had contributed to such a good deed.

From that day onwards, Paul had such a good heart that all the animals were his friends. And all the little girls wanted to be friends with him because he was so good natured and cried, "He is so kind. He has a heart of gold!"

Mese angol nyelven: Thumbelina

Once upon a time a very pretty little girl was born and her mother called her Thumbelina because she was no bigger than a thumb.

Because she was so small, she slept in a nut shell with violet leaves for her sheets and pillows.

One night while she was asleep in her little cradle, an ugly toad came in through the window. On seeing little Thumbelina, he said, "At last, I have found a lovely wife!"

He carried her away to the pond in the garden and placed her on a leaf while he went down below to tidy his home at the bottom of the pond.

When she awoke, Thumbelina began to weep bitterly at finding herself all alone in the middle of the pond. A little fish took pity on her and carried her far away out of the reach of that ugly creature and put her down on the bank.

A beautiful butterfly who was passing by picked her up, and after flying over valleys and villages, set her  down in a wood, where she spent the summer until winter came.

It so happened that one day she met a wounded little bird, who could not fly. She felt sorry for him and tended him most carefully. When spring came, the grateful bird carried her away to his country, the Kingdom of the Flowers.

When they arrived there, the little bird set her down very gently on a flower, right next to the dwelling of the Prince of that country.

The Prince was as small as she was, with tiny wings on his shoulders.

The moment the Prince saw Thumbelina, he fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. Thumbelina was delighted to accept.

As a wedding present, the inhabitants of the Kingdom of the Flowers, gave Thumbelina a pair of beautiful little wings so that she could fly round all the flowers that grew there.

And so, Thumbelina lived happily ever after with her husband the Prince and her best friend the little blue bird.

Mese angol nyelven: The homeless squirrels

Mother squirrel and her little ones were without a home and did not know where to turn because, with a single stroke, a brawny woodcutter had chopped down the tree in which they lived.

"What will become of us?" wept mother squirrel.

Mother squirrel threw her arms round her little ones but she could not stop wailing.

Peter the woodcutter marched along, with his axe over his shoulder, in the mood for chopping down all the tress in the wood one after another.

" Tra-la-la! Tra-la.lay! I'm off to work today!" sang Peter happily on his way through the wood in full bloom.

Zap! Zap! rang out through the silent wood. It was Peter's axe chopping down tree after tree as he worked tirelessly on.

"Timber!" he cried.

He didn't care if they were inhabited by friendly little squirrels and other animals who had so lovingly built their homes in them.

"Neighbour, Neighbour!" cried a terrified little squirrel.

"What's the matter?" exclaimed another squirrel opening the door of her house.

"The heartless woodcutter is in sight. I think he is coming here."

"Oh! How dreadful!"

A squirrel watchman on his usual beat in the wood came upon the woodcutter and caught him red handed.

"Aren't you sorry for what you are doing?" he said to him.

"Oh! And who are you?" asked Peter in surprise.

And mother squirrel too came up to him sobbing and said, "This is my house and  my little ones are inside. If you chop down this tree I shall have no home."

"Please forgive me, I never thought of that," cried Peter, full of remorse.

Actually, although Peter was a happy-go-lucky sort of chap, his heart was in the right place.

From that day onwards, the little squirrels marked all the trees that the woodcutter could chop down because they were not occupied. That way, he would not be short of wood and nor would our little friends be homeless.

"I'll paint this red," said the squirrel," so that Peter will not miss it and it will not be chopped down, for this is where my little ones live!"

So it was, that all the little animals lived happy and contented and helped the good woodcutter to carry away his timber.

Peter was also very happy, surrounded by his friends the squirrels. At last peace reigned in the wood. No more crying and sobbing was heard, because there were no homeless squirrels now.

Mese angol nyelven: Alice in Wonderland.

One day, Alice went on a trip to the country, and when she had walked about and played a great deal, she fell asleep inder a tree.

Suddenly, she saw a rabbit who was running along with a large watch in his hand.

"He is so elegant, he must be going to a party", thought Alice. "I will go with him!"

Alice followed the rabbit who ran and ran until he came to a hollow tree which he entered, and Alice, without thinking went in after him.

Down and down she fell...

At last she came to a beautiful garden where the flowers spoke to her.

"Have you seen a rabbit round here? asked Alice.

"No!" said the flowers.

Alice continued her journey through Wonderland. On her way, she was invited to take tea with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare.

"Would you like some dough-nuts, little girl?" asked the Mad Hatter.

Although she asked lots of questions, Alice did not find the rabbit. Then, suddenly, she saw him running in the distance and set off after him.

"This time he will not get away!" she thougt.

Alice followed the rabbit and arrived at a strange gathering where there was a Queen of Hearts, and there too was the rabbit, looking at her in alarm.

The Queen said in a very loud voice, " We shall have to change this little girl into a playing card!"

And then she added, "Seize her!"

Alice was rettified when she heard those words and then...she woke up. It had all been a dream!

To her surprise she found she was still in the place where she had fallen asleep.
